works really well for me as you can tell by the fact that I'm posting at 2:47... but is there a way to make it work without hearing the file? so I always just trance for 4 hours?

If you use it regularly for a while you may find that you do start doing it on your own since the file is training your mind to function on 4 hours sleep. Be patient and you should be able to achieve that state on your own.
